By ‘extending your screen’ (in Windows) and then using Microsoft PowerPoint’s inbuilt ‘Presenter’ mode, your current PowerPoint slide is displayed on the laptop screen as well as your notes section, a timer, upcoming slides and access to other programs and files:  Here is how you can do that:

Instead, by ‘extending your screen’ (in Windows) and then using Microsoft PowerPoint’s inbuilt ‘Presenter’ mode, your current PowerPoint slide is displayed on the laptop screen as well as your notes section, a timer, upcoming slides and access to other programs and files:

If you’ve never tried this – you should! It is much better. A few reasons:

·         You can jump over slides that you don’t have time to present (much better than merely jumping across them – audiences get anxious when they feel they are ‘missing’ something)
·         You can cue up videos or music that you want to play
·         You can easily search for resources using the Internet without distracting your audience

 How to do this?
 1) Enable dual monitors in Windows
Use the hotkey ‘Windows’ + ‘P’. This works in Windows 7.
This will bring up this box:
Select ‘Extend’.

Alternatively, you can right click on the desktop background and select ‘Screen resolution’.
Then click the ‘Multiple displays drop-down list, and select ‘Extend these displays’.
This will allow you to have an extended desktop. Your mouse will now be able to move not only across your laptop screen but also the projector screen, as though they were side-by-side.
In this screen you also have the option to choose which screen is the main screen (with the menu bar across the bottom). You can also set the relationship between the two screens, for example, having the projector screen interface with the laptop screen as though it were to the left or right of it.

  2) Select ‘Use Presenter View’ in PowerPoint
In PowerPoint, click on the ‘Slide Show’ ribbon menu tab, then select ‘User Presenter View’ in the Monitors section as in the picture below:

To ensure that the presentation appears on the projector screen and the presenter view appears on the laptop, click on the ‘Show On’ drop down menu and ensure that the projector is selected as the monitor:
Now try to show your presentation!
The Presenter view should appear on your laptop screen like this:
Notice that you can access other programs, and can see slides further on in your presentation
